ADDRESSING 21ST CENTURY SKILLS AND COMMON CORE COMPETENCIES IN WORLD LANGUAGE EDUCATION

Program Content: 
Program will examine instructional strategies that engage 21st century learners. they will learn to design lessons that teach 21st century skills, develop common core competencies, integrate career-technical education and develop students' linguistic and cultural proficiency in order to prepare them for future study, work and global citizenship. 


ENHANCING COMMON CORE AND STANDARDS-BASED COMPETENCIES THROUGH TECHNOLOGY

Program Content: 

Participants will learn some recent technologies and programs used to enhance world language programs and support Common Core efforts. They will learn to locate and use authentic materials from the web including video, music, art, graphics, text, data; to make input comprehensible by effectively using PowerPoint and Moviemaker; to facilitate interpersonal communication through online sites such as GoogleClassroom; and to support presentational communication using Voki, Voicethread and other online tools. During each session, participants will be allowed some time to practice new skills and develop lessons that incorporate common core elements. Participants must be familiar with the basic functions of the programs in Microsoft Office and need to bring a laptop with wireless capability.


USING FILM TO ENHANCE THE COMMON CORE AND STANDARDS-BASED COMPETENCIES OF SPANISH SPEAKERS

Program Content: 

Participants will learn about the major artistic movements in Peninsular and Spanish American cinema exploring cross-cultural links to history, current events, art, music and literature. They will analyze the cinematic arts through representative films and filmmakers, and examine procedures for developing Common Core and Standards-based competencies using film to enhance the curriculum and infuse it with authentic experiences of cultural merit.

1B - Using STORIES to Enhance Common Core and Standards-Based Foreign Language Instruction

1C - Common Core and Standards-Based Practices for Teachers of Spanish Speakers


Program Content:

Tier 4:
1E - Addressing the Common Core through Authentic Communication in the Standards-Based Classroom


Program Content:

  • effective use of State Board adopted texts and supplementary materials
  • standards-based unit design, development of Common Core competencies, technology-enhanced curriculum
  • practicum: delivery of academic content, literacy development, reading/listening, writing/speaking structures
  • formative and summative assessment, considerations for portfolios
  • strategies for working with English learners and diverse, low performing populations
  • reflection on practice, colleague collaboration, leadership development

TIER 5:
2A- Beyond the Textbook: Common Core and Standards-Based Instructional Practices (Levels 1-3)


Program Content: 

  • Standards-based content knowledge and content specific instructional practices
  • introduction to the content and format of the examination and the AP Framework
  • integrative skills: focus on academic content, culture, listening, reading and Common Core competencies
  • integrative skills: focus on academic content, culture, speaking, writing and Common Core competencies
  • functional language use: formal and informal registers
  • developing student accuracy through content and context
  • reflection on practice, colleague collaboration, leadership development

TIER 6:
AP Language - Preparing students for the AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam and the Common Core Units for 2015 - 2016 will differ from those from 2014-2015


Program Content:

  • Standards-based content knowledge and content specific instructional practices
  • introduction to the content and format of the examination and the AP Framework
  • exploration of major historical periods and literary movements in Spain and Spanish America
  • focus on academic content and Common Core competencies
  • strategies for the analysis of poetry, prose and drama; study of representative authors and works
  • examination of parallel manifestations in art and music
  • reflection on practice, colleague collaboration, leadership development

Tier 7:  
AP Literature - Preparing students for the AP Spanish Literature and Culture Exam and the Common Core - Selections for 2015-2016 will differ from those from 2014-2015
