TIER 1:
ADDRESSING 21ST CENTURY SKILLS AND COMMON CORE COMPETENCIES IN WORLD LANGUAGE EDUCATION

Program Content: Participants will examine instructional strategies that engage 21st Century learners. They will learn to design lessons that teach 21st Century skills, develop Common Core competencies, integrate career-technical education and develop students' linguistic and cultural proficiency in order to prepare them for future study, work and global citizenship.


TIER 2:
ENHANCING COMMON CORE AND STANDARDS-BASED COMPETENCIES THROUGH TECHNOLOGY

Program Content: Participants will learn to locate authentic materials on the web including video, music, art, graphics, text, data; make input comprehensible using PowerPoint and Moviemaker; facilitate interpersonal communication through Skype and other online sites; and support presentational communication using Voki and Voicethread. Participants must be familiar with the basic functions of the programs in Microsoft Office and need to bring a laptop with wireless capability.


TIER 3:
USING FILM TO ENHANCE COMMON CORE AND STANDARDS-BASED COMPETENCIES OF SPANISH SPEAKERS

Program Content: Participants will learn about the major artistic movements in Peninsular and Spanish American cinema exploring cross-cultural links to history, current events, art, music and literature. They will analyze the cinematic arts through representative films and filmmakers, and examine procedures for developing Common Core and Standards-based competencies using film to enhance the curriculum and infuse it with authentic experiences of cultural merit.


TIER 4: 
USING THE ELD AND COMMON CORE STANDARDS AS A ROADMAP TO ACADEMIC SUCCESS

SECONDARY: Participants will learn to use the English Language Development and Common Core Standards in creative and inclusive ways in order to develop the academic literacy of all students. Presenters will model a variety of approaches that participants will adapt to units they teach, including: Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English, collaborative learning strategies, diversified instructional practices, and techniques to address multiple intelligences within the framework of a thematic unit.

ELEMENTARY: Participants will learn to use the English Language Development and Common Core Standards to maximize achievement in English and in the content areas. Participants will focus on assessing student proficiency, designing stage-appropriate communicative tasks, unpacking complex texts, building collaborative, interpretive, and productive competencies; using micro- and macro-skills to enhance English language development, and maximizing achievement of content area literacy.


TIER 5:
PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE AP EXAMINATION IN SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

Program Content: Participants will be introduced to the examination and to the new AP Framework in language and culture. They will develop strategies to enhance Common Core competencies and student proficiency in interpretive, interpersonal and presentational communication using a wide variety of authentic materials that reflect the cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. In order to accommodate large enrollments, this course will be repeated in our December-April series of workshops.
