Effective Launch of Online Language Programs

This course offers a short, but impactful guide to starting the beginning of the year online. It will model and provide instructors with the tools needed to prepare for online instruction. Teachers of all grade levels will build courses that align with the National Standards for Online Learning in any Learning Management System. This course is designed to complement the Optimizing Distance Learning being offered by Dr. Valérie Sun.

Effective Launch of Online Language

Duration: 2 Weeks - 4.5 hours of synchronous and 5.5 hours of asynchronous exploration/creation 
Units: 10 hours, 1 Continuing Education Unit

Brief Course Description

This course will model and provide instructors with the tools needed to prepare for online instruction. Teachers of all grade levels will build courses that align with the National Standards for Online Learning, and provide participants with the information they need in order to include their materials in any Learning Management System.

This program is delivered online in three synchronous sessions:

Session 01: Crash Course in Online Pedagogy and the Syllabus
Session 02: Designing Engaging Synchronous Activities
Session 03: The First Week of an Online Language Class

Optimizing Distance Learning

As the beginning of the school year approaches and the uncertainty of the school year continues, this course prepares teachers for distance learning optimizing synchronous and asynchronous learning for their students. Every teacher has the opportunity to dive deep into current educational technology tools and learn to plan engaging lessons that use interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication. This course is designed to complement Effective Launch of Online Language Programs taught by Bethany Thompson.

Brief Course Description

This course models optimal synchronous and asynchronous world language instruction that can be used for distance and hybrid learning. Teachers of all grade levels will have hands-on experience with multiple processes and tech tools for content instruction that provide high student engagement. Each experience, process, and materials can be tailored and used directly with students.

This program is delivered online in two-hour, bi-weekly synchronous sessions:

Session 01: Building a Classroom Community
Session 02: Selecting Authentic Materials
Session 03: Designing Engaging Asynchronous Lessons
Session 04: Creativity and Student-Centered Learning in a Language Classroom
Session 05: Publishing and Amplifying Student Voices
Session 06: Social Emotional Learning in the Hybrid Classroom


About the Seminar Leaders

Bethany Thompson, EdTech Coordinator for Apple Valley Unified School District, part-time French instructor at Victor Valley Community College and Cal State University, San Bernardino, and Google Certified Trainer, has been integrating technology since 2009 in her French classes. She has been training teachers to teach online for the past year.

Valérie Sun, Ed.D., a dual-immersion teacher, mentor teacher, teacher trainer, and curriculum writer has been seamlessly integrating educational technology since 2013. A certified educator for Microsoft, Apple, and Google among other edtech tools, Valérie dedicates much of her time providing professional development to teachers to design and plan lessons that are student-centered and high in creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.
